What is cold process soap?

Cold process soap is one of the oldest forms of soap making. It is a process whereby oil(s), liquids (water, goats’ milk, etc.), and lye (sodium hydroxide) are blended together. The mixing of these compounds spark a chemical reaction known as saponification. The by-product of this chemical reaction is soap and glycerin.

Is there lye in my soap?

NO! When lye and oil molecules combine they chemically react and change into soap and glycerin. Once this reaction occurs-saponification-then no more lye remains.

How long do cold process soaps take to cure?

All cold process soaps need to cure for a period of 4-6 weeks. The curing period allows any residual moisture to evaporate and this is what gives the soap its hardness.

How can I protect my soaps from melting away?

Your soaps will last longer by placing them in a soap saver or soap sack. Make sure your soap dish has good drainage capabilities. Using these simple methods will allow your soap to dry between usages and protect it longer from melting away.

Will my soap spoil?

The pH level of cold process soap does not allow mold or bacteria to grow.

How long will my cold process soap last?

Longevity depends on personal usages. Generally speaking cold process soaps have a shelf life 18-24 months.
